Pathway: Develop strategic anchors

Pathway

Develop strategic anchors

Develop the strategic anchors that will guide decision making and help uncover what makes this organisation unique.

Why is this important?

  • Help streamline decision-making by providing clear criteria for evaluating options & opportunities.
  • Enable leaders and teams to make informed choices that are aligned with the business's overarching strategy.
  • Keep us focused on how we deliver value and meet our customer's needs better than our competition.

How does this pathway work?

Strategic Anchors are found in the core strengths or truths of a business that allow it to meet customers’ needs better than their competitor.

Before forming your anchors, you should be asking yourself these kinds of questions:

  • What have been our inherent sources of success to date?
  • What are our unique strengths (from our SWT)?
  • What do our customers value about us?
  • What makes us unique and valuable?
  • What do you do that your competitors don’t or can’t do?

And once you've worked through your anchors, test them!

For each anchor, ask these questions:

  • Does it leverage your strengths and passions?
  • Can you actually make it happen?
  • Is it pragmatic and clear?
  • Is it valued by your target customers?
  • Reflect on your purpose – does it support us in delivering on our purpose?
  • Reflect on your bullseye – does it work in our bullseye?
  • Reflect on your values – does it sit with our values?

For the set of anchors as a whole, ask these questions:

  • Are they coherent?
  • Do they work together to guide good decision making?
  • Would a competitor share all three?
  • Is at least one or more difficult for a competitor to replicate?
